The Crazy Month

Festival time!

Every year, Edinburgh is transformed in the month of August.  I mean transformed.  We’re a dinky city, and every summer we’re swamped with all manner of performers and tourists.  It’s flippin’ brilliant.

(Well, except when you’re in a rush and trying to get across town.)

I’ve already been to a few shows, and I have many more planned (I save up through the year to fund all the merriment!)  The best festival begins tomorrow: the Book Festival!

I’m going to a celebration of Iain Banks, a talk with Margaret Atwood and Neil Gaiman (exciite!), and  discussion on Mary, Queen of Scots.

Nowadays, my festival experience involves lots of comedy, drink, and parting with cash; however before I hit the magical age of 18, my Edinburgh festival was centred around Charlotte Square, and the white tents that hold magical books and authors and literary hingers oan.

Here’s the programme, if anyone is in the city: https://www.edbookfest.co.uk/

It’s a great place to soak up the atmosphere and read or write.  I’ve started a new project so have oodles of excitement and energy and enthusiasm (shame that will peter out in 8, 9 weeks, when I want to slap my characters in the face).

As with any new project, I have a new notebook.

Hobbit notebook

It’s the Hobbit, and it’s a beaut.  I spent far too long picking new pens for my lovely notebook, as if the ink I use will improve my writing somehow.

Always worth a shot.

Notebooks – the joy of my life.  I have a to-do list notebook, a writing diary, a cheapo notebook for daily scribbles,  and project-specific notebooks.

Notebooks writing

Oh, and I use different pens for each notebook (and most are colour-coded).

I think I’m addicted.  In fact, when I decided to pursue writing a couple of years back, part of me wondered if I only wanted a valid excuse to buy lots of stationery and soya lattes.

I’m still not convinced of my motives!  But sod it, for the next 16 days I will be camping up at the Book Festival, working away in my nice notebooks and drinking lattes.
